WFMW – get rid of fruit flies
Seems that most every spring/summer we get attacked by fruit flies...drives me crazy! This year after a little advice from my mom and a little ingenuity I came up with a trick that's worked wonderfully for us! Start out with a wide-mouthed bowl - cover the bottom of it with vinegar - I used apple cider. Cover the bowl with Saran Wrap & then poke several holes in the wrap with a tooth pick. The fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar & will go through the Saran Wrap to get to it. I poked 5 holes...you don't want the holes to be too large (or the flies can just fly back out), but they need to be a bit bigger than the tooth pick in order to give the flies more room to get in.
I left it on the counter for several days...it seemed to be a bit of a slow start, but within a day, it seemed there were 5 or 6 new flies trapped in the bowl every time I walked by. I typically either flicked them into the vinegar or smashed them on the rim of the bowl so I'd know they wouldn't escape. After a few days, voila - our fruit fly problem was significantly reduced...we had a rather bad case this year, so I emptied the bowl & started over...after a few more days the flies were all but gone! Hope it works as well for you as it did for me!
